Leak During Rescue Mission Sparks Controversy

A leak during the F-15 rescue in Iran sparked controversy, with Trump saying it endangered the mission and triggered an investigation.

A major controversy has emerged following the rescue of two U.S. airmen from a downed F-15E Strike Eagle in Iran, after a reported leak during the operation raised concerns over operational security.

U.S. President Donald Trump said the military had deliberately confirmed only the rescue of one crew member, while withholding information about the second airman, who was wounded and hiding in mountainous terrain behind enemy lines.

According to Trump, a media report indicating that “there’s somebody missing” revealed the existence of the second airman, potentially alerting Iranian forces that another U.S. serviceman was still on the ground.

He argued that the disclosure compromised the mission, making the rescue significantly more difficult and increasing the risk to both the stranded airman and the rescue teams. Trump stated that once the information became public, Iranian forces—and reportedly civilians—began actively searching for the missing pilot, especially after reports that a reward had been offered for his capture.

The first public indication came from Amit Segal, who cited a Western source saying that one American crew member had been rescued. The statement implied that another crew member remained unaccounted for.

Segal later clarified that he was not certain he was the first to report the information but declined to reveal his source.

In response, Trump announced an investigation into the leak, describing the individual responsible as a “sick person” and warning that those involved could face legal consequences if the source is not disclosed.

The incident has raised broader concerns about information security during active military operations, particularly in high-risk environments where real-time disclosures can impact mission outcomes.

Despite the complications, U.S. forces ultimately succeeded in rescuing both airmen, concluding one of the most complex recovery missions of the conflict.
