The military standoff off the coast of Venezuela has escalated dramatically, with the Maduro government scrambling its F-16 fighter jets and activating its “territorial defense system” in the capital of Caracas. The moves are a direct and defiant response to the presence of two U.S. Air Force B-52 strategic bombers, which have been conducting a high-profile show of force in the Southern Caribbean.
According to emerging reports, American-made F-16 fighter jets from the Venezuelan Bolivarian Air Force were scrambled from El Libertador Air Base in Aragua state on Wednesday evening. Their mission is almost certainly to monitor, and potentially challenge, the U.S. bombers operating in international airspace just 100 miles from the coast.
Simultaneously, a major alert has been issued in the capital. The Maduro government has reportedly deployed its “territorial defense system,” a move that typically involves the mobilization of military units and the activation of anti-aircraft missile systems, such as the Russian-made S-300, to protect key government and strategic sites in and around Caracas.
This rapid military response signals that Venezuela is treating the U.S. bomber mission as a credible and imminent threat. It is the most significant defensive military mobilization by Caracas in recent memory and places the two nations’ air forces in a tense and potentially dangerous proximity.
The standoff began earlier on Wednesday when the U.S. deployed the B-52s in what was widely interpreted as a coercive signal to the Maduro regime following a complete breakdown in diplomatic relations. That diplomatic rupture was itself a consequence of Caracas’s hostile reaction to the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to opposition leader Maria Corina Machado.
