A shooting attack on a bus in Jerusalem has left four people dead and at least 15 others injured, in what Israeli authorities are calling the most serious terror attack in the city since late 2023. According to emergency services, two assailants opened fire on a public bus and a bus stop at the Ramot Junction in a coordinated assault. The attackers were reportedly armed with automatic weapons, firing indiscriminately at a crowd of civilians.
The attack, which occurred on Monday, September 8, has been condemned by Israeli officials and has prompted a large-scale security operation in the city. Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with victims scattered on the ground near the bus stop amidst shattered glass and debris. Medics from the Magen David Adom (MDA) ambulance service rushed to the scene to provide on-site treatment before evacuating the injured to nearby hospitals. Of the 15 people wounded, five are in critical condition, while five others sustained serious injuries.
Israeli police announced that both perpetrators were shot and killed at the scene, with major access roads to the junction immediately closed. Police and security forces were deployed in force to secure the area and search for any additional threats. The attack is the latest in a wave of violence that has plagued the region, particularly since the start of the conflict in Gaza, with the use of automatic weapons in a public attack serving as a grim reminder of the volatile security situation.
While no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, Israeli officials have vowed to “reach the despicable murderers and settle accounts with them and with everyone who assisted them.” The incident has already heightened tensions and is expected to lead to a severe security crackdown. The attack on a bus, a daily symbol of ordinary life in the city, underscores a new phase in the ongoing conflict, where civilians are increasingly being targeted. As the nation mourns the loss of the four victims, the focus will turn to preventing similar attacks in the future and holding those responsible accountable.
