🇪🇹 Ethiopia has officially completed construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), one of Africa’s most ambitious and contested infrastructure projects. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed confirmed the milestone today, ending 14 years of work on the Nile River megaproject.

The GERD is scheduled for official inauguration in September, despite persistent opposition from Egypt and Sudan, who fear its impact on their Nile water share. In a statement, Abiy emphasized that the dam “is not a threat but a shared opportunity,” promising that Ethiopia remains committed to cooperation with its downstream neighbors.

Abiy also reassured that Egypt’s Aswan Dam has not lost a single drop of water due to GERD operations and called on Nile Basin countries to “celebrate this milestone of African progress together.”

The GERD is expected to generate more than 6,000 megawatts of electricity and boost Ethiopia’s economy and regional influence, though Egypt has warned of potential escalations if water security is compromised.
