Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone call with Syrian interim President Ahmad Al-Sharaa, marking their first official conversation since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
According to the Kremlin, Putin reaffirmed Russia’s “principled stance in support of Syria’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity” and expressed Moscow’s readiness to assist in improving Syria’s socio-economic conditions.
During the call, Putin emphasized the need for “a series of measures to ensure lasting stability and revive intra-Syrian dialogue.” Meanwhile, Al-Sharaa highlighted the “strategic and deep-rooted ties” between Syria and Russia, expressing openness to all parties to serve Syria’s national interests.
Additionally, Putin invited Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan Al-Shibani to visit Moscow for further discussions. The call comes as Russia seeks to maintain its military presence in Syria, despite Assad fleeing to Moscow in December after his government’s collapse.
