Defense Minister Approves Draft Orders for 7,000 Ultra-Orthodox Israelis
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has approved the issuance of 7,000 draft orders to ultra-Orthodox Israelis starting next week. The decision had initially been made by former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant just a day before his dismissal. Katz chose not to overturn it, and the IDF confirmed earlier this week that the process will proceed as planned.
The first 1,000 draft orders will be sent out on Sunday, with all 7,000 expected to be issued over the coming months.
The Defense Ministry stated that Katz “intends to engage in an in-depth dialogue with all parties to work towards an agreed solution, aiming to genuinely integrate the ultra-Orthodox community into the IDF and alleviate the burden on conscript, career, and reserve soldiers.”
Katz also noted that “the IDF will do everything necessary to provide a supportive environment for ultra-Orthodox soldiers, ensuring they can fulfill their duties while maintaining their religious lifestyle.”
